Where to Buy Electric Cars in Las Vegas
Las Vegas continues to grow. Not simply as a tourist attraction that draws tens of millions of visitors each year. It’s also drawing in new businesses.
Drive away from The Strip, toward Henderson or Summerlin, and you’ll see buildings that host technology, sports, and other companies. West of Interstate 15, you’ll find the new Raiders stadium being built for a 2010 opening. Head back on Las Vegas Boulevard, and you’ll notice the T-Mobile Arena, home to the city’s NHL hockey franchise as well as numerous large events.
More construction equals more cars
All of this expansion, the city’s largest in over a decade, means more cars on the road. Vehicles that still run on fossil fuel. Automobiles that fill the air with emissions that add a haze to the air during those hot summer days.
You don’t want to go this way.
Reducing Vegas’ carbon footprint
You want to do something to protect this glistening oasis in the Nevada desert. Yet, since public transportation outside of the city proper is still developing, you need a way to get to your place of business or area of recreation. So, you need a car.
That’s why you want to go electric. And, believe it or not, Vegas is ready for you to do so.
Charging stations
Both the city and Clark County have initiated sustainability programs to reduce their carbon footprints. For instance, 100% of Las Vegas’ power comes from renewable sources.
Another way they are reducing their footprint is installing charging stations. An internet search of these stations shows a large concentration of them in downtown, along The Strip, and the surrounding areas.
What this means is purchasing an electric car won’t be a burden. Whether at home or business, you should find a way to charge your vehicle.
New or used?
If you decide to make a purchase, the next question is if you should buy new or used? The answer is both. The caveat is how much you can spend.
If you decide to buy used, then look for pre-owned models that are only a few years old. These will have the newest power cell technology. Older models, even prior to 2010, may not have the ability to be serviced should a problem arise. Or, if they can, the cost will be higher.
If you decide to buy new, then you want to do your homework. The average MSRP for a 2019 electric car starts around $25,000 with the Smart Fortwo and goes up to near six figures for a Tesla. Thus, if a dealer says they’ll charge you $15,000 for a Tesla, be wary.
To get a better idea where to purchase an electric car in Las Vegas, here are a few suggestions.
1. CarMax
There are three locations of this national pre-owned vehicle company in Las Vegas. One off of West Sahara near Rainbow Park, another near the Centennial Hills neighborhood, and a third in Henderson. And all of them sell once-owned electric vehicles.
What’s available depends on their location. For instance, a recent search of the Centennial location resulted in 215 results. They ranged from a 2018 Nissan Leaf with 7,000 miles for $21,000 and a 2016 BMW I3 Mega World for $18,000. This does not include tax and other after charges.
In this situation, it’s highly recommended to stop by a CarMax dealership to test drive a vehicle. Don’t choose it simply due to its looks or mileage.
2. AutoNation
For both new and pre-owned electric vehicles, you can’t go wrong by stopping by the AutoNation complex off of West Sahara. Electric vehicles are available from BMW, Toyota, and Nissan.
When shopping, this should be the first place to go to see pre-owned vehicle costs. Then, return to CarMax to see their costs. In the end, you may have a chance to bargain with AutoNation dealers if you find a less expensive pre-owned vehicle. No matter where you go, make sure you look at a certified car to ensure all parts are up to spec.
3. Tesla
If you’re one of those people — we mean huge fans of the Tesla brand — then you’re in luck. The company has a dealership in Las Vegas near Spring Valley. Considering the city is known for its big spenders, this doesn’t seem like a stretch.
Tesla deals only in electric vehicles, and their MSRP is higher than other companies. So, if you consider making a purchase, research is an absolute need. Patience may be as well, because some vehicles may not be available at the time you want to buy.
Nevertheless, if you decide to drive off the lot in a new Tesla, remember you have an opportunity to return it to the company. Just as long as it’s within seven days or driven 1,000 miles, whichever comes first. Don’t forget to get proper Tesla insurance!
Don’t shop with blinders on
Though electric vehicles continue to grow in popularity, you don’t know what you’ll get between models. Therefore, read reviews of some of the most popular models and trims before you leave for a test drive.
In addition, you may also want to look into return policies, like the one Tesla has, from other companies. Because, after a few days of driving, you may decide it’s not right for your purposes.
